The Sgt. Gregory L. Hunter Annual "Remember the Fallen"
Memorial Golf Tournament and Scholarship Foundation was established to honor Grand Prairie, TX Police Sergeant Gregory
L. Hunter, who was tragically killed while on duty by an armed felon in a van parked at WalMart on Interstate 20 in Grand
Prairie at approximately 9:37 am on Friday morning, June 18, 2004. Sgt. Hunter was responding to a call to assist another
officer regarding a suspicious van that had been parked overnight with its engine running and all doors locked, as it became
a welfare issue. As Sgt. Hunter made contact with the suspect, he was ambushed as the suspect suddenly opened fire with
a .45 caliber handgun, fatally wounding Sgt. Hunter. Sgt. Hunter was a 30 year veteran with the Grand Prairie Police
Department. Another officer who was onsite immediately went around to Sergeant Hunter's location and called for
assistance. The subject then began firing at that officer, striking him twice in areas not protected by his vest. Despite
being wounded, the officer was able to return fire and killed the suspect.
He leaves behind his loving wife and daughter, Denise and Erin, respectively. This memorial golf tournament and scholarship foundation was envisioned by his wife and daughter as a way to carry on Sgt. Hunter's legacy and belief to be great servants to the Lord by reaching out and helping his community for which Sgt. Hunter served, assist all of law enforcement and their families, and to always honor and remember all of law enforcement and their families, who have lost their lives while protecting their cities and making the supreme sacrifice. Our hope is to raise funds to help with organizations that we and Sgt. Hunter are passionate about such as the Texas Peace Officers Memorial Foundation, MADD, the Guns & Hoses Foundation of North Texas, Santa Cop and the Sgt. Gregory L. Hunter Memorial Scholarship Foundation, just to name a few, which awards (2) $1000. scholarships annually to either a graduating senior from each high school in Grand Prairie or dependent child of an employee or police officer of the Grand Prairie Police Department. To date, $12,000 in scholarships have been awarded. Sgt. Hunter's annual memorial golf tournament is sponsored by the Grand Prairie Police Benevolent Association, registered in the state of Texas, as a non-profit corporation and is a public charity exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. We need your help. It is our hope that you join in our efforts on making an impact on our community as Greg did for so many years. Thank you for your generosity.
